Materials Used To Produce Plasticizers

Jul 10, 2026

The raw materials used to produce plasticizers depend primarily on the specific type and chemical structure of the plasticizer; different types require different starting materials. Taking common phthalate plasticizers as an example, production typically involves phthalic anhydride or phthalic acid and corresponding alcohols as the main raw materials, which are reacted via esterification. The choice of alcohol-such as n-butanol, isobutanol, or isooctanol-determines the specific molecular structure and properties of the resulting ester plasticizer. Variations in the carbon chain length and structure of the raw materials influence key characteristics such as volatility, migration resistance, compatibility, and plasticizing efficiency.

Beyond phthalates, other types of plasticizers utilize distinct raw material compositions. For instance, aliphatic dibasic acid ester plasticizers generally rely on dibasic acids (such as adipic acid or sebacic acid) and corresponding alcohols; citrate plasticizers are primarily produced from citric acid and alcohols via esterification; and phosphate plasticizers are made from phosphoric acid (or related phosphorus compounds) and alcohols. The raw materials for polyester plasticizers are more complex, typically involving the polymerization of dibasic acids and diols; controlling the ratio of raw materials and reaction conditions allows for the production of high-molecular-weight plasticizers. These diverse raw material combinations enable plasticizers to meet the specific requirements of various applications, including flexible PVC products, wires and cables, artificial leather, and films.

Plasticizer production also involves the use of catalysts, antioxidants, and other auxiliary materials. Catalysts facilitate chemical reactions-such as esterification-by increasing reaction rates and raw material conversion efficiency, while certain auxiliary materials serve to improve product color, thermal stability, or storage characteristics. Raw material purity significantly impacts the quality of the final product; the presence of excessive moisture, impurities, or unreacted substances can adversely affect the reaction process and the purity of the resulting plasticizer. Therefore, during the production of plasticizers, it is necessary to select raw materials appropriately based on the performance requirements of the target product and to control the raw material ratio, reaction temperature, reaction time, and post-processing steps in order to obtain plasticizer products that meet the required specifications.
